Kasia Zając
Somatic Education teacher in Harriet Goslins’ CFR method (rooted in the teachings of M.Feldenkrais); practitioner of cranio-sacral therapy, somatic bodywork instructor.Kasia is a 1990 graduate in clinical psychology from the University of Wrocław, Poland. In the years 1992-2006 she was associated with Esalen Institute, California, where she worked in program development and studied a series of somatic disciplines.
Currently, she lives in Poland and concentrates on practicing and expanding awareness of Somatic Education. Kasia established the Legnica Center for Somatic Education. She leads classes and workshops, and works individually with people interested in self-awareness and self-development. She also invites teachers representing other somatic disciplines to teach at the center.

Individual work takes the form of an experiential session in which the instructor and a student work together to uncover habitual movement patterns, and look together for new, more functional patterns that are more appropriate for the student’s age and condition.
In individual work, Kasia uses her experience in cranio-sacral therapy and visceral manipulation. In both of these schools, as well as in education through movement, the quality of touch is the most important aspect of work. The touch does not change anything by force – rather it reveals the actual state of the person, and supports the possibilities for change.
According to the Feldenkrais’s maxim, we can change our way of doing something only after we realize what we are actually doing in the moment. Through individual work, Somatic Education becomes a dialogue between our body and our consciousness. During the session, every student has an opportunity to verbalize their current experiences and changes happening in their body. Thanks to that, the changes have the possibility of happening both more rapidly and becoming better integrated.
Each lesson lasts about an hour and a half, and takes place in an atmosphere of respect for the student and their limits.
Every group is experiential. Participants listen to the teacher’s verbal instructions, and explore various movement sequences such as the function of reaching, getting up, walking, etc. At the beginning, explorations happen in a lying position. Movements are very slow, gentle and safe for all participants, regardless of age and physical condition. All movement explorations include imagining, thinking, and feeling, as well as moving. Effects of the same session may be different for each participant. At the end of the session, participants are encouraged to share their experiences and discoveries.
Groups consist of up to 14 participants.
In such small groups everybody receives
individual attention. The teacher, using
touch, brings attention to various
possibilities existing in a given movement sequence and demonstrates them with
each person individually.
Group work provides a unique opportunity
to re-discover oneself as a unity in many
aspects. It also gives a rare occasion to share
one’s experiences, and to be a witness to the sharing of other group members.
Within such an individual approach to group work,
the changes in muscular tension, patterns
of breathing and movement happen rather quickly, yet bring long-term results.
